For years, former First Lady Michelle Obama has been doling out sound advice. And now, she’s at it again. But this time she’s discussing something very special to us: the importance of travel.
“With Mother’s Day just a couple days away, I find myself thinking a lot about the way my mother raised me. And even though our family was crammed into a tiny apartment, one of the greatest gifts she gave me was the freedom to explore and develop into my own person,” Obama wrote in the caption of a new Instagram post. “For instance, even though we didn’t have much money, she and my dad cobbled enough money together to send me on a high-school trip to Paris, which opened up the world to me in so many ways.”
Obama went on to explain that now that she’s raising her own two girls she wants to instill that same lesson.
“I wanted to pass that lesson on to my own girls. I’ve been so fortunate to be able to travel with Sasha and Malia all across the country and around the world—experiences my mother never would have dreamed of back when I was their age,” she wrote. “But though the settings may be different, the message is the same, and it’s one I hope mothers everywhere pass on to their daughters—in seeking out new perspectives and reaching outside of our comfort zones, we can discover more about ourselves.”
It’s certainly true that Obama and her husband, former President Barack Obama, have prioritized travel since leaving the White House. In the past few years, the Obama family has been yachting in the Caribbean with Richard Branson, diving into the crystal blue waters of French Polynesia, and toured around Italy with one if its best family-run companies.
Obama isn’t alone in her thinking about the importance of travel. Barack shared the same sentiment in April during a conversation with Hilton CEO Christopher Nassetta. He said: “There is something spectacular about seeing a new place and experiencing a different culture but when you’re able to watch that sense of discovery in your children’s eyes, that’s more special than anything else.”
